With no space experience and, critics noted, little formal aviation background, Duffy runs the Transportation Department through a period of crisis, a January 2025 midair collision that killed 67, repeated radar outages at Newark, and a government shutdown that forced air traffic controllers to work unpaid, while also serving as acting head of NASA. He has blamed the previous administration for the aging systems.
