He meant it as a warning, calling the city a "mess." He was there to win Michigan, the auto industry's home, and he said it to Detroit's face. The state's leaders pushed back: Governor Gretchen Whitmer told him to "keep Detroit out of your mouth," and Mayor Mike Duggan pointed to the city's falling crime and growing population. Trump carried Michigan anyway.

The auto industry is back… it's pulling Detroit and Michigan along with it.

The numbers tell a different story. His tariffs on imported cars and parts, and levies as high as 50% on Canada, which Michigan's economy heavily depends on, hit the industry hard. The Detroit Regional Chamber warned that 234,000 jobs in the region rely on trade with Canada. General Motors said it shifted $4 billion in production partly to avoid a tariff hit it estimated at $4 to $5 billion, and still cut thousands of jobs. Michigan's job growth stalled.

James, the Republican congressman now running for governor, framed the choice that way at a Trump event, telling the crowd that Democrats "hate their own president." He and Michigan's other Republican leaders have championed Trump's agenda, tariffs included, even as auto suppliers in their own state cut jobs.

After Michigan voted for Biden, Trump personally called the two Republican members of the Wayne County canvassing board, which covers Detroit, urging them not to certify the results; the party chair on the line told them to "not sign it." Without that certification, the state's result could not be finalized. The canvassers certified anyway. It was part of a broader push, including a lawsuit the campaign filed and then dropped, to keep Michigan's vote from counting.
