On Nippon Steel's purchase of U.S. Steel · December 2024

Months later, in office, he approved it, traveling to Pittsburgh to celebrate the sale of the iconic American steelmaker to Japan's Nippon Steel as "the largest investment in the history of Pennsylvania." The United Steelworkers union, which represents the workers, never dropped its opposition: "Issuing press releases and making political speeches is easy. Binding commitments are hard." Dave McCormick, who had also opposed the deal as a Senate candidate, reversed and called it "great."

State officials estimate about 300,000 Pennsylvanians will lose Medicaid coverage under Trump's "big, beautiful bill," with rural hospitals across the commonwealth at risk of closing. McCormick's premise is contradicted by the data: a KFF analysis found 92% of working-age adults on Medicaid are working, caregiving, ill, or in school.

The one Pennsylvania Republican who voted no

All but one of Pennsylvania's Republican House members voted for the bill, as did Senator McCormick. The exception was Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a moderate from suburban Bucks County, who broke with his party specifically over its Medicaid cuts. Even some of McCormick's own voters balked: at one telephone town hall, a self-described conservative told him she was "not happy with the big, beautiful bill."
