Ken Paxton ran the Texas attorney general’s office under felony indictment for nine years, was reported to the FBI by eight of his own deputies, and was impeached by his own party. He is also the man who filed the lawsuit to overturn the 2020 election, and Trump’s chosen candidate to reshape the U.S. Senate.

Indicted on felony securities-fraud charges in 2015, he ran the office under indictment for nine years. In 2020, eight of his own senior deputies reported him to the FBI for bribery and abuse of office; four later won a $6.6 million whistleblower judgment. In 2023 the Republican-led Texas House impeached him, 121-23, only the third official impeached in Texas history, before the state Senate acquitted him.

Paxton filed Texas v. Pennsylvania, asking the Supreme Court to throw out Joe Biden's certified wins in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the case Mike Johnson rallied 126 House Republicans to support. Georgia's Republican deputy secretary of state, Jordan Fuchs, said the claims were false and irresponsible, and the Court dismissed the suit for lack of standing. Paxton spoke at the January 6 rally that preceded the attack on the Capitol. Trump has since backed him over Senator John Cornyn in a 2026 Senate primary.
