On August 14, 2026, six days after the Senate confirmed him, Attorney General Todd Blanche appeared at a Trump campaign event on Long Island and praised the Republican nominee for New York governor, Bruce Blakeman, saying he was “doing everything we need him to do to back the blue.” FBI Director Kash Patel appeared alongside him. The Justice Department has long held that the attorney general stays out of partisan campaigns to preserve public trust in impartial justice, and Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, never campaigned for Governor Kathy Hochul. Legal commentators said the appearance may violate the Hatch Act, which restricts partisan political activity by executive-branch officials.
