He pressured Texas Republicans to redraw their congressional map mid-decade to pick up five House seats before the 2026 midterms, saying plainly “we pick up five seats”; Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio followed. A federal judge Trump himself appointed struck the Texas map down as an illegal racial gerrymander. <span class='caveat'>California Democrats redrew their own map in response, after Texas moved first.</span>
